Die Zauberflöte by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
This fantastical masterpiece is in the form of Singspiel, popular form that includes both singing and spoken dialogue. The opera premiered in 1791, just two months before the composer’s prema-ture death. The spiritual plot journies from child’s play to meta-physical levels, as the Queen of the Night persuades Prince Tamino to rescue her daughter Pamina from captivity under the high priest Sarastro. Instead, he learns the high ideals of Sarastro’s community and strives to join it. Together, Tamino and Pamina undergo severe trials of initiation, which end in triumph – with the Queen and her cohorts vanquished. The common bird man Papageno, who accom-panies Tamino on his quest, fails the trials completely, but is re-warded anyway with the hand of his ideal companion, Papagena. The music will thrill you as the visual effects transport you to an-other world, guided by the lure of a true magic flute. Away we go!
