Who We Are

Opera Las Vegas is dedicated to promoting and encouraging interest in operatic music. In addition to offering familiar works from traditional opera repertoire, Opera Las Vegas also seeks lesser-known operas and encourages the creation of new works. Opera Las Vegas works in partnership with other fine arts organizations, educational institutions and entertainment corporations to nurture development of professional skills in students and young artists through apprentice programs. Recognizing the significance of art as communication, Opera Las Vegas strives to offer the community performing arts of the highest caliber.

Opera Las Vegas was established in 1999 by Gloria Allen, a world renowned opera singer, and several other like-minded individuals who wanted to bring this art form to Southern Nevada. Opera Las Vegas is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation with a staff comprised solely of volunteers skilled in management, planning and marketing, as well as the musical and theatrical arts.

Opera Las Vegas produces high-quality operatic performances for opera lovers in Southern Nevada. Opera Las Vegas is proud to be affiliated with highly acclaimed professional opera singers, many of whom have sung at The Metropolitan Opera in New York City, as well as the Chicago Lyric opera, Milan’s La Scala, and other fine American and European opera theaters, and who have performed in productions and special events at those locations. Our goal is to provide fine performances culturally enriching the Las Vegas region, as well as the surrounding States.

We are funded, in part, by a grant from the Nevada Arts Council, a state agency, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.

Education:

There are currently very few options available for exposure to professional opera in Southern Nevada. Many adults and children have never heard an acoustical voice in a live performance. Opera Las Vegas believes the promotion of professional opera through education will be particularly enlightening to our large diverse populations who do not have the opportunity to travel to Los Angeles, San Francisco or other strong opera centers.

Opera Las Vegas offers free attendance to students at our main stage productions. We recognize that cultivating this audience will ultimately help grow our audience base. Teachers and students of music classes are invited. Additionally, Opera Las Vegas is in discussion with a major cultural organization to bring more performances to a broad range of our student population.

Professional Training:

Young opera singers require years of stage experience before singing major operatic roles. Las Vegas is blessed with many highly talented young singers. Opera Las Vegas is able to select gifted local singers for supporting roles providing them with this experience. Up-and-coming singers benefit from the participation with Opera Las Vegas because they have the opportunity to apply the skills and intellectual development gained from formal study to actual stage performance. They are also coached by lead singers who have years of singing and acting experience. Classes in stage deportment, acting, dance and movement for singers and how to prepare and do a successful audition are just some of the possible offerings.
